Falmouth Artist Valerie Belcher Featured At Maser Gallery
By: ENTERPRISE STAFF, June 4, 2014
The paintings of Falmouth artist Valerie Belcher will be on display at the Maser Gallery at Falmouth Community Television, 310A Dillingham Avenue in Falmouth, through June 26. The public is invited to the artist’s reception, Sunday, June 15, from 3 to 5 PM.
Originally from Medway, and trained as a registered nurse and holding a bachelor’s degree in economics, Valerie Belcher turned to art nine years ago when her husband died. “It was, and is, my salvation,” Ms. Belcher said.
For those nine years she has been painting and growing her customer base. She is now a self-employed artist working through galleries and with professional interior designers, always striving to create art that is both pleasing to the eye and contemplative, she said. “I am a tonal painter who works in oil on canvas. I strive for color harmony and a blend of details and ambiguity. The shapes in my paintings are designed to play against each other, creating patterns of light and color,” she explained.
Ms. Belcher has been studying and exhibiting at Falmouth Artists Guild with local artist, Terry Dunn, and many other local artists. She is a member of the Falmouth Artists Guild, a juried member of the Cape Cod Art Association in Barnstable, and a member of the American Women Artists Group.
Additionally, for over 23 years Ms. Belcher has been crafting Nantucket Baskets. They are made in the traditional way, maintaining the original format of the Nantucket Lightship workmen who wove the baskets for over a century.
Ms. Belcher’s work has recently been shown in Falmouth’s Chafin Gallery and Highfield Hall.
Gallery hours are Sundays and Mondays from 2 to 10 PM; Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 10 AM to 10 PM; and Fridays from 10 AM to 6 PM.
