6:55 PM: Well, we’re going to be starting a bit late. The game was slated to start 10 minutes ago, but the Barnstable-Marshfield game went a little late. Final score, MHS 3, BHS 1. Saw most of the third period, the Red Raiders had some great chances in the final five minutes, but the MHS goalie came up big time after time.
As for tonight’s game, I fully expect a Clippers route. They have superior talent, and are tested. The Whalers have beat up on a poor D3 schedule. This one could get ugly.
First Period
Falmouth scored the game’s first goal at the 5:56 mark. Defesenman Brendan Smith floated a wrister from the top of the left wing circle that beat the goalie to the near post. FHS has a 4-2 edge in shots right now and is currently about to kill off a penalty on which they have not surrendered a shot.
New Bedford has 14 players suited up, with two in goaltending gear. Yup, that’s right, they have 12 skaters.
Falmouth just scored again. Dan Leary in front took a feed from behind the net and roofed it. Tyler Sabens threw the pass.
CURRENT SCORE: Fal 2, NB 0 End. Shots 14-2.
First period thoughts: Well, the Clippers are certainly the stronger team. It should be 3-0, Dan Leary had a bid for his second of the game that hit iron, and had the goalie out to dry. New Bedford can’t generate anything. They have two shots on goal, and the first one came inside the first minute. NB hasn’t had a shot on goal since the five-minute mark. Barring a miracle, I just don’t see how this game gets any closer than it is right now.
Second Period:
NB got a good shot in the first minute, by Andrew Medeiros, from in front, and then went on a power play. They didn’t generate a shot with the extra man, and then, as the PP expired, Leary stole the puck at the blue lline and walked in, roofing his second of the night to make it 3-0.
After 2: It’s now 5-0 Falmouth, and as predicted, the rout is on. NB certainly gives all they’ve got, but they just don’t have the horses. The Clippers are just a much better team, and they’re showing it. It’s 5-0, but it could be more if not for goalie Jon Mendes, who has made a couple of big saves and also had the post help him some.
Brendan Smith floated a wrister from the left point again to make it 4-0 at 11:22. Then, at 13:44, Mike Wilson finished off a breakaway with a sniper shot off the right side.
Shots on goal in the period, 11-3. For the game, 25-5. Falmouth has as many goals as NB has shots on goal.
Third period: Well, it’s almost over. New Bedford broke the shutout on Andy Soares’ first goal of the season midway through the frame against FHS backup Phil Walker. Soares banged it in from the doorstep.
FHS got two goals prior to that one. Tyler Sabens finished off a great feed from Leary at 2:29 and then at 6:37 it was Dylan Sodd, again sent in by Leary, who is having a field day.
Final score, 7-1. All Falmouth, as predicted. Final shots Falmouth: 11-14-12: 37, NB: 2-3-3: 8
FHS advances to the south semifinals. They will face No. 2 Wellesley here at Gallo on Friday night at 7 PM. The winner plays the winner of Needham-Marshfield, here at Gallo sometime on Sunday. That info straight from the MIAA officials.
