I’ve been on vacation all week and haven’t done one thing that I usually love to do when on vacation, read a good book. I picked one up at the library before leaving, but have not been able to get into it all.
My biggest problem is that I read what would have been a great beach book two months ago when author Brett Battles was kind enough to send me the galleys for his just released “Shadow of Betrayal,” his third book in the Jonathan Quinn series.
If you haven’t read any of the Quinn novels, and you dig suspense and intrigue, a la old school Tom Clancy and David Baldacci, then his stuff is right in your wheelhouse, just like it is mine.
I found his first book at the library on the new books shelf and I’ll be honest, it was the cover art of a silver/black gun that grabbed my attention. I picked it up, read the liner notes, and said “let’s give it a try.”
Maybe my litmus test for picking up the book wasn’t very scientific or involved, but it worked. I couldn’t put it down. It was one of those books that I’d open up near bedtime, to read myself to sleep with, and look up at the alarm clock to see that it was already 2:30 AM in the blink of an eye. That’s how you know it’s a good read, when hours fly by and you just don’t notice or care — until the morning when you’re sleep depraved.
“Shadow of Betrayal” picks up where “The Deceived” (my favorite book in the series thus far) left off. Nate, his apprentice, is healing up and wanting to prove himself after a devastating injury, Orlando, his love interest, is dealing with a personal tragedy. Life is moving forward, and then a new job is thrust at Quinn that is much more personal than he ever conceived possible.
Of course adventure ensues and the trio is in for the fight of their lives, one that could alter the course of American history. The pages fly by, and the action never stops.
There you have it, my summer reading tip for you.
