For the picks contest we’ve all got Pittsburgh over Cleveland tonight. Big surprise.
*** Albert Pujols signed today for ludicrous money, $250M over 10 years. He’ll make more than me this year on the first day of his contract. I’m in the wrong business.
It makes sense to break the bank for him if you’re the Angels, but it’s going to be hard to write those checks towards the latter years of that contract. He will be 32 years old (in Dominican years) on Opening Day this year.
Through the first 10 years of his career he’s put up unreal numbers. He’s swatted 445 homers and could make a legitimate run at Bonds* record if he stays healthy. If anyone was going to land A-Rod money again it was Albert. He’s got a .328 career average and a ridiculous career OPS of 1.037. No one’s worth that kind of dough, but if any baseball player ever came close it would be him.
*** The MIAA sent out a press release yesterday about the Cathedral team having a touchdown taken away because the player scoring the TD “taunted” by raising his arm in celebration before crossing the goal line, which is technically a violation and a flag-able offense.
I talked to a prominent local Head Coach about the ruling yesterday. He said that the ref made the right call and that the player turns his head and is talking trash while on his way to the end zone. Personally I did not like the ruling. If you’re scoring a TD in the biggest game of your life and you raise your arm in celebration you’re just human. You’re happy in that moment and you’re giving a genuine reaction. I think the ref ruled correctly on the letter of the law, just not its’ spirit.
