Hank-isms 8

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

Everyone’s second favorite Steinbrenner is now officially The Boss in NY. Every once in a while Hank actually has an understatement.

“I realize it’s a great responsibility. My dad is, needless to say, a tough act to follow.”

This one slipped by me a few weeks back, but I found it today. Gotta love Hank, he said that injuries are to blame for the horrible year with the Yankees and that they’ll be back next year.

We’re going to win it next year,” he said. “If we need to add a top veteran pitcher, we’ll do that. We’ll do whatever we need to do. Next year, we’ll be extremely dangerous.

Hankisms Pt. VI

Friday, July 4th, 2008

It wouldn’t be the Fourth of July without something Steinbrenner related. As you know, today is George’s birthday and I hope Papa Stein is coherent and happy despite his team’s 9-0 shellacking at the hands of the Sox last night.

Well, thanks to Hank, we’ve got another Hank-ism to throw into the mix on this holiday. From yesterday’s Post.

“Maybe a little less outside distractions, and a little more concentrating, and they’ll start hitting better. I thought they would go on a consistent tear, and it hasn’t happened yet.”

Hank-isms, pt. 5

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

Hank Steinbrenner is more and more like the old man every day. When I heard that he went off about the National League’s rules I first wondered when the last time it was that we had an edition of Hankisms. Wouldn’t you know it, very close to one month exactly. So Jr. is pretty ticked off about the NL rules, and we’ll let him explain like only he can.

“My only message is simple. The National League needs to join the 21st century. They need to grow up and join the 21st century.”

“I’ve got my pitchers running the bases, and one of them gets hurt. He’s going to be out. I don’t like that, and it’s about time they address it. That was a rule from the 1800s.”

Hankisms Pt. 4

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

I told you that Hank Steinbrenner is like that old Sports Illustrated commercial, the gift that keeps on giving. I actually didn’t think he’d flying off the handle again until at least June. What’s he going to do when they’re 15 games back? The following quotes all came out yesterday.

“These players are being paid a lot of money and they had better decide for themselves to earn that money.”

“This is going to get turned around … If it’s not turned around this year, then it will be turned around next year, by force if we have to.”

“I’m not saying they are not giving the effort, but they need to be playing harder.”

“We’ve got to forget about all the injuries and start playing our butts off.”

“[The Yankees] need to start treating it like when they were younger players and going after that big contract, like they’re in [Triple-A] and trying to make the majors. That’s the kind of attitude and fire the players have to have.”

Hank-isms Pt. 3

Monday, April 21st, 2008

It’s been a little while since our buddy Hank gave us anything to write about. Well, being a Steinbrenner, he couldn’t keep his mouth shut too long, now could he. Yesterday he opined about the future of Joba Chamberlain. The best part is that Brian Cashman came back to say that Joba The Pitcher will remain in the pen for the foreseeable future, regardless of the owners wishes.

I want him as a starter and so does everyone else, including him, and that is what we are working toward and we need him there now. There is no question about it, you don’t have a guy with a 100-mile-per-hour fastball and keep him as a setup guy. You just don’t do that. You have to be an idiot to do that.

Hankisms Pt. 2

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

I must say, I love Hank Steinbrenner. I’m currently reading a piece on him in the NY Times Sunday Magazine and this guy is just what Red Sox fans needed. He’s comedy gold I tell ya, gold. Long live Hank.

I wanted to find a second entry into the Hankism’s, and found this one online about performance enhancing drugs in baseball. It’s not as much fun as the Red Sox Nation stuff, but we’re starting to build a file.

“Everybody that knows sports knows football is tailor-made for performance-enhancing drugs. I don’t know how they managed to skate by. It irritates me. Don’t tell me it’s not more prevalent. The number in football is at least twice as many. Look at the speed and size of those players.”

Hankisms Pt. 1

Saturday, March 1st, 2008

Well, I’ve kind of figured that Hank Steinbrenner is going to be fun. As the leader of the rival Yankees, it’s cool to have someone wearing the black hat leading the way for the enemy. I fully expect that over the course of this blog’s life we’re going to have plenty of great Hank Steinbrenner quotes to feature. So, here at the Musings. We’re starting with this one. Yup, The Head Yankee is ticked that the Sox won it all, and he thinks Red Sox fans, ESPN and everyone else that likes to wear Sox stuff are hosers.

“Red Sox Nation? What a bunch of [expletive] that is. That was a creation of the Red Sox and ESPN, which is filled with Red Sox fans.

Go anywhere in America and you won’t see Red Sox hats and jackets, you’ll see Yankee hats and jackets. This is a Yankee country. We’re going to put the Yankees back on top and restore the universe to order.”- Hank Steinbrenner

Oh how I root for the Red Sox to build an early lead. This guy has the potential to make his day look like the relaxed, calm Steinbrenner.
