Today’s Reality Check

Wareham is NOT part of Cape Cod.

I aim this specifically at the Taunton Gazette, which ran a story with the following opening:

A Cape Cod woman could face multiple theft charges after police said they caught her Sunday trying to either sell or exchange merchandise for drugs.

Nicole Petronelli, 23, of 1 Highland St., Wareham, was arrested by Taunton police at around 4:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the Cumberland Farms on Broadway, after cops say they saw her pick up a suspicious man seen walking out of Fairfax Gardens Housing Complex on DeWert Avenue.

No, no, a thousand times, no.

Cape Cod is a geographically distinct region, a collection of 15 towns in Barnstable County, and Wareham is not one of those 15 towns, no matter how hard it wishes it were.

Wareham is part of Plymouth County. The closest it comes to being part of Cape Cod is the fact it is part of the Second Plymouth District, which overlaps with Bourne, and its self-proclaimed status as the “gateway to Cape Cod.” Wareham’s major export is Geena Davis.

The management concedes this is a very petty gripe, but as a native Cape Codder from a long line of Cape and Island natives, I’m genetically predisposed toward putting Wareham in its place.

The views and opinions in the Enterprise blogs are those of the author and are not neccessarily shared by Falmouth Publishing.

Putting Wareham in its place? I have no problem with you wanting to maintain the “elite” grouping of the Cape towns, but in the last five years, your Cape base town, Hyannis, has turned to a gang wannabe, drug infested, DUI mongering pit, along with Falmouth, Dennis and all parts of Yarmouth. Before you concern yourself with off-cape areas, you should become more proactive on fixing your side of the canal. Trust me, I live just over the bridge mainland side, and you have it no better than us.

You’re new around here, aren’t you? If I had a visible finger it would be pointing to the title of this here “blog,” specifically to the work “snark.” Did the “major export is Geena Davis” remark fail to adequately indicate that there was a strong tongue-cheek connection?

PS: Hyannis? I operate out of Falmouth — the beefy, muscular, manly tricep of Cape Cod, baby.

Sorry about the slow response, but I was busy reading an article about the person that was stabbed last night at the Quarterdeck Lounge at 247 Iyannough Road, Hyannis.

Mike, Falmouth, like other towns, do have their bad apples. I agree that it probably has the least amount of problems, and it IS the “strong arm of the cape”. Agreed.

New around here? Maybe. 2003. Melbourne, Florida is my hometown, another city plagued with common problems and issues.

I just think the terminology “putting Wareham in its place” is demeaning when Cape towns have their own issues.

Wrong. If Barnstable County is the defining factor, where does this leave the Elizabeth Islands. The geography of the Cape dates further back than the construction of the canal. Plymouth and Wareham are indeed part of the Cape. Even the Gatemen are part of the CCBL. Using the canal as a definition is not only in error, it implies an elitist attitude generally seen in washashores.

  5. Mike Bailey says:

Washashores? You mean the the Cape Cod Native Wannabes — known by us natives as “Warehams”?

The Elizabeth Islands? You mean Wareham Jr.?

(Since no one is getting the whole facetiousness thing, I’m just going to have fun poking the angry bull in its pen from here on out. I invite others to play along.)
