Upper Cape Base Will Not Host Immigrant Children

Massachusetts will not house unaccompanied minors who have crossed the US southern border, according to a Boston Globe report.

The Globe report said that the decision not to house children at Cape Edwards on Joint Base Cape Cod or Westover Air Base in Chicopee was based on a decrease in the number of children crossing the border, as well as increased capacity at existing shelters.

The federal government had approached Massachusetts Governor Deval L. Patrick about the possibility of housing unaccompanied minors at a federally run shelter at Camp Edwards.

The Bourne Board of Selectmen drafted a letter expressing its opposition to the proposal and asking the governor to not consider Bourne as a site for the children.
