The Cape Cod Canal Flotilla of the Coast Guard Auxiliary will offer an 11-week course in boating skills and seamanship, beginning Wednesday, September 3. The course will meet weekly from 7 to 9 PM through Wednesday, November 19, at the Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical School, 220 Sandwich Road in Bourne.
This in-depth course will cover applicable topics and techniques of value to recreational boaters to foster safe boating on near shore waters. The subjects will include: choosing a boat, equipping a boat, legal considerations, trailering a boat, boat handling, aids to navigation, navigation rules, nautical charts and basic piloting, powering a boat, knots and lines, introduction to navigation, and other safety issues.
The course is approved by the Massachusetts Environmental Police. Upon satisfactory completion of the course, youths 12 to 15 are eligible to apply for licensure under the Massachusetts State Boating Regulations so they might legally operate a power boat alone.
There is a $25 fee for the text used in the course. There is an additional $36 payable to the school for registration. For registration, call Upper Cape Tech at 508-759-7711, extension 211. The instructors are members of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary.
