Steve Forbert, an American songwriter, will perform a concert at Cotuit Center for the Arts on Friday starting at 8 PM.
Mr. Forbert’s discography, 14 studio albums, tells stories of the road and the changing landscape.
He was a truck driver in Mississippi before traveling to New York City, where he performed as a street musician at Grand Central Station. The road has “romance,” he said, a feeling he gets when traveling to the next city for the next gig. His music is akin to that of Warren Zevon, Gene Clark, Gram Parsons and other top American songwriters, and he has often been compared to the likes of Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen.
Now, 34 years after his first album, Steve Forbert is releasing a new one, “Over With You.” Its 10 songs pinpoint a wide range of emotions that color personal relationships. “This is an album that has taken a lifetime to make,” he said. “You don’t just pull these songs out of thin air; you have to live them.”
Over the past three decades, he has been the subject of stories in Rolling Stone as well as in other popular media; in 1980, his “Romeo Song” hit number 11 in the Billboard Hot 100 chart. He still tours regularly.
