5th Annual Quahog Day @ Lighthouse Inn
When: Fri Jun 21st
1:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Where: Lighthouse Inn | 1 Lighthouse Road | East Dennis
Celebrity chef Ben Sargent – host of Hook, Line and Dinner on the Cooking Channel – will emcee the 5th Annual Cape Cod Quahog Day on Friday, June 21 in Dennis. Sargent, who has also appeared on The Martha Stewart Show, Throw Down with Bobby Flay, and Chopped, was born in Cambridge and summered on the Cape with his family growing up. He currently resides in Brooklyn and his first cookbook, The Catch, will be released in July.
Quahog Day, now a rite of passage into summer on Cape Cod, is held annually on the first day of summer. The quirky event answers the all-important question “How many weeks of beach weather lie ahead on the Cape? “Doug the Quahog”, a small mollusk perched in a red velvet-lined clamming basket, delivers the official prognostication to his human sidekick, Johnny Quahog, also affectionately known as The Secretary General of Quahog Republic. Last year, Doug correctly predicted eighty-four days of sunshine.
A seafood connoisseur and lover of Cape Cod, Sargent was thrilled to return to his roots and emcee what has become one of the Cape’s most unusual events.
This year’s Quahog Day event will be held on the beachfront of the Lighthouse Inn in West Dennis. Johnny Quahog and Doug will arrive via Jet Ski and be escorted by their Quahog Security Team over a red carpet and onto the property. The public is invited to attend the free event and take part in the ceremony. The Lighthouse Inn will be providing complimentary food, including Chowder and Chef Sargent’s “Rockaway Beach Stuffies,” along with a cash bar. Limited edition Quahog Day tees – provided by Cape Cod Textile – will be on sale at the event, and kids can enjoy such activities as face painting.
Quahog Day was conceived of and is hosted by the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce. After fielding hundreds of calls from prospective visitors each year asking the Chamber to predict the weather months ahead of time, the Chamber decided to seek answers elsewhere. “We passed the buck to the Quahog,” said Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce CEO Wendy Northcross. “And after the brutal winter we had, we’re really hoping for a sunny forecast…we’ve certainly earned it!”
The event kicks off at 1 PM on Friday, June 21. The Lighthouse Inn is located at 1 Lighthouse Inn Road in West Dennis. For more information – and to view “Behind the Mollusk,” a video documenting Doug’s rise to fame – visit www.QuahogDay.com.
