The Cataumet Schoolhouse Preservation Group's mission is to promote the schoolhouse for educational, cultural and recreational activities available to the community and general public during the year. It is a non-profit group that provides an opportunity for children to experience the early days. Given the technology today, says volunteer Judith A. Martin, it is important to learn about the old days and gain some perspective. Background:
Throughout the fall, the Cataumet schoolhouse is home to a program that assists third grade students fulfill their history requirement by stepping back into a day in the life of a 19th century school kid, i.e., actual participation in traditional studies, activities, and games which are presented by CSPG members, who are often retired school teachers, in the one-room school house. This enactment help students connect and appreciate the past as they go forward.
