A $20.00 donation is suggested to benefit the FMSGrp. This year’s event will have a couple of community challenges, many personal challenges as well as more HEAT!  Falmouth High School students are challenging Principal Joe Driscoll and Vice Principal James Demers and also a personal Selectman’s challenge between Selectmen Murphy and Braga.  Many of the wonderful plungers since the first plunge will also be returning. Everyone is welcome to join in.

The first Polar Plunge was organized by Joseph O’Connor, of North Falmouth on Martin Luther King Weekend of 2010.  At the time Joseph was a student at Falmouth Academy. He wanted to raise funds in support of the troops from the Cape Cod area serving in harm’s way. His goal was to raise $400 to buy I-Tune gift cards for the troops.  That first year; the Plunge rose over $2,000. In the three years since its start the Plunge has raised over $15,000. Some of the funds raised were designated to the Falmouth Military Support Group’s Scholarship Fund and to the SGT Matthew Gallagher Memorial Fund as well as for gift cards for those deployed on the lists of the Falmouth Military Support Group.

The Falmouth Military Support Group’s scholarship fund was started in 2009 with proceeds from various events supporting the fund.  The group has given over $14,000 to Cape Cod OIF/OEF (Operation Iraqi Freedom /Operation Enduring Freedom) Veterans in their pursuit of educational opportunities.  Applications for the 2013/2014 year will be available in the spring.

SGT Matthew Gallagher of Falmouth was killed in Iraq while serving his country in June, 2011.  A Memorial Fund was started by the Falmouth Military Support Group. Matthew’s family wanted a handicapped accessible beach ramp to be built at their private neighborhood Old Silver Association Beach. Due to logistics it wasn’t possible, a donation was made towards repairs to their bridge at the beach and plans for a ramp were never abandoned.  This spring Falmouth will see its first fully beach accessible handicapped ramp being built on the Residents Beach at Old Silver Beach. With over a year worth of planning the project will come to fruition this spring. The Falmouth Military Support Group, with funds from Matthew’s Memorial Fund, will be buying the materials and the Barnstable County Sheriff’s department will be building the ramp.

Joseph is now a sophomore at Catholic University in Washington, DC and is continuing his Plunge for the Troops tradition.  He will be coming home for the Plunge and once again involving the students at Falmouth Academy and this year his younger brother Will has set up a challenge with the students at Falmouth High School. Joseph has again designed the Annual Plunge shirt, … Remembering Matthew Gallagher and they will be sold for $20.00 at the Plunge.
There will be hot chocolate and Munchkins available and this year heated tents and outside heaters. Keep in mind it is January, please prepare yourself appropriately to Plunge.     Wearing something on your feet like water shoes will help to protect them from the cold sand as well as sharp objects such as barnacles. Don’t come alone; bring a friend or family member to assist you when you come out of the water. Have warm clothes ready, a robe, sweatpants, a towel anything to help aid getting your body temperature back to normal.
