Fit & Happy: Simple Ways to Sneak In a Workout
By: MEREDITH NIXON, May 8, 2014
In a perfect world, we'd all have at least an hour a day to devote to our fitness. But in the real world, 24 hours a day doesn't seem like nearly enough time to fit in work, school, and family. Stop stressing! Here, are a few simple ways to sneak a workout into your super busy schedule.
Turn Your Commute into a Workout
On days that you may not have time for your daily run, consider packing your necessities -- keys, cash, credit card, phone, and ID -- into a small back pack and run to and/or from work instead. Running is a great workout, but it's also great transportation. Not a runner? Try a fast walk or even ride your bike to work. Or at the very least, get off the bus or train a few stops earlier, or park the car farther away to extend your time moving!
Set Your Alarm Early
One of my favorite sayings is, “Exercise in the morning before your brain has time to realize what you’re doing!” Working out in the AM also means you get to cross it off your to-do list ASAP.
Sneak In a Lunch Break Workout
We all get a break during our work day. Try using this time to get a little fitness in. Whether you hit the nearest gym, go for a walk outside or even climb the stairwells, making use of this time will keep your waistline in check and you'll be more productive during the day.
Work Out at Work
Don’t just use your lunch break; stay active at your desk too! Try these simple tricks: sit on a stability ball to strengthen your core (you can even purchase a stability ball desk chair). Keep dumbbells or exercise bands at your desk and try to squeeze in 12 to 15 reps of various resistance exercises: bicep curls, overhead press, tricep extensions etc. Every little bit counts and makes a difference.
Take the Kids with You
No excuses! As a mother of 2, I always managed to get my workouts in no matter what their age or what season it was. Invest in a jogging stroller to get your miles in, research and find videos you can do at home while they nap, and there are plenty of easy to do home workouts you can do anytime, anywhere. Try walking lunges, AB crunches, push- ups etc. A fit mommy is a happy mommy!
Multitask on the Treadmill
More Fit & Happy
Hop on a treadmill holding a three- to five-pound dumbbell in each hand, and set the speed to a brisk walk. Try doing timed intervals of upper body moves; shoulder presses, bicep curls, triceps extensions, side/front raises, etc. It's a great upper-body challenge that also gets your heart pumping. Do this a few times a week, slowly increasing the length of time for each interval.
Make It a Date
Fitness goes better with friends. Married or single doesn’t make a difference. The whole idea is camaraderie, accountability and motivation. Setting up workout dates will keep you committed and fit!
No More "Couch Potato"
Just because you're catching up on your favorite show doesn't mean you can't make the most of your time. This is another great time for those at home workouts! Push-ups, crunches, jumping jacks and squats too are all easily done in the living room. Clear out plenty of room between you and the TV and make room for your dumbbells, jump rope, and other fitness tools you’ll need! You’ll be surprised how quickly your workout goes when you’re watching the tube!
Incorporating just a few of these simple ideas into your daily routine will certainly make a difference. Not only will you be moving and burning more, but you’ll feel so much better soon noticing that even a little bit of exercise is guaranteed to make you Fit& Happy!
