Fewer and fewer Americans exercise their primary right and responsibility to vote, and even fewer of our young adults vote. To help turn this trend around, the Boys & Girls Club of Cape Cod holds elections every November and the entire Club takes part in the electoral process.
The kids learn first hand about leadership, organization, public speaking, and how to run a campaign. Just like real candidates, our kids have to pull nomination papers & get the signatures of 15 registered Club members within a week to qualify and get their name on the Club ballot. This year they had 18 active candidates! Once the signatures on their nomination papers are certified, the teams refine their campaign platforms, find volunteers, make posters & campaign literature, and get ready for the all-Club debate. The campaign goes on for 8 days, with posters everywhere, and at the end of that time, the candidates all take part in a Club debate.
Everyone in the Club is required to attend the debate and preparation for the Club debate is comprehensive because the candidates are asked questions that relate to the Boys & Girls Club - and about issues that are being discussed at the state and national level. On the day of the election, Club members are given a ballot & are told how to mark it so that it is valid and can be counted. The Club Youth President and Club Youth Vice President are announced at the Club’s Friday dinner that day.
As a result, the Boys & Girls Club members understand the electoral process from start to finish and learn first hand how the process works. More importantly, they understand the need for every citizen to vote and to participate in our democracy. This year’s Club Election was decided by just one vote. Nothing could drive the point home more graphically than that that every vote counts.

| Kris C. - 2007 Youth President Age: 12; Grade: 6; Hometown: Mashpee. Kris has been a Club member for 4 years. His favorite activity is flag football. Some of his goals as President are to have more DDR mats available, more wiffle ball games and work with the members to see what they want at the Club. Kris wants to be a computer technician when he grows up. His favorite foods are hamburgers and hot dogs with macaroni. His favorite memory at the Club is the election. Kris lists his good qualities as being kind, a great friend, and trustworthy. If Kris could be one famous person he would be Reggie Bush because he is a great role model for kids. Text of Kris’s Keynote Speech: “Hello ladies and gentlemen. My name is Kris N. C. and I am the President of the Boys & Girls Club of Cape Cod. And this is Robbie T. H. and he is the Vice President. We got our positions by having ideas to make the Club a positive place for kids. Some of our accomplishments include raising money for Torch Club. How that was done was by having two all-nighters raising over $1 thousand dollars. Finally the Boys & Girls Club has a great recycling program that Torch Club presented. The Boys & Girls Club of Cape Cod is important because it helps parents to work a full day not having to worry about their kids. They are in good hands being supervised by great staff that the Boys and Girls Club have. If the club was not there kids would probably get in lots of trouble and they would rarely see their friends. Finally, thank you for giving me the opportunity to be active in the present and future of the Boys & Girls Club of Cape Cod. Thank you, and have a nice evening.”Robbie H. - 2007 Youth Vice President Age:12; Grade:6; Hometown: Mashpee. Robbie has been a Club member for 7 years. His favorite activity is flag football. Some of his goals as VP are to add dodge ball tournaments and hold more activities for the younger kids. Robbie wants to be a football player when he grows up. His favorite food is fried chicken with mac & cheese and spinach. His favorite memory of the Club is his first “All Nighter”. Robbie lists his good qualities as staying active. If Robbie could be anyone famous he would be Ladainian Tomlinson because he is Robbie’s idol and plays the same position he plays.
Text of Robbie’s Keynote Speech: “Good evening everyone… My name is Robbie H. and I am the Club’s Vice President. I have been a Club member for 7 years since I was 6 years old.
The Club has been a very important part of my childhood and my everyday life for many reasons. First of all, the Club has helped me to stay out of trouble. If I wasn’t involved with the Club, I would probably be home alone every day after school…watching t.v. instead of being active and getting my homework done.
Each day when I get to the Club, I always get my homework done first so I can go play with my friends afterward.
Having a quiet place to study, helpful staff, and computers to work on, are all very important parts of how I got to be an honors student.
Being the Club’s President last year, I have had the chance to be part of 2 elections so far, and I have learned lots of things about campaigning, reaching out to my peers, and trying to make everybody satisfied.
If I could vote in the national election this year, I would vote for Obama…but unfortunately, I will have to wait 6 more years to be old enough to cast a ballot.
I would like to say thank you again to everyone here tonight for all that they have done for the Club and me. I really appreciate all of you and I hope that I can continue to make the club a better place to be for everyone. Thank you.”

Thanks to all of our supporters who joined us on our 2nd Annual Mother’s Day “Cruise to Cure A.L.S.” Sponsored by the WarehamWal*Mart and held in Loving Memory of Joan E. MacLeod, last Saturday May 10, 2008. The sold-out luncheon cruise was the perfect Mother’s Day gift for the woman who has it all, and raised over $4,000 for the fight against A.L.S.The MacLeod Family hold the annual fundraiser in memory of their mother Joan. Joan battled A.L.S. valiantly in her final years. Joan’s compassion for others and strength of character inspired her devoted children to help others in their fight against Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Bill MacLeod (also a board member of our Foundation) spoke about his mother and also took a moment to remember her dear friend, Tom Osborne, the wonderful man who was the love of Joan E. MacLeod’s life, who passed away earlier this year. Event goers were encouraged to take mom on a luncheon cruise around Sesuit Harbor on the SS. Lobster Roll as a Mother’s Day gift and enjoy an afternoon of sightseeing, delicious food and raffles. THANKS to everyone who purchased raffle tickets, we raised over $500 on the raffle alone!
The delicious buffet was prepared by the Chef/Owner of the Sesuit Harbor Café, JC Cuchetti. The flawless meal included ½ Lobster Savannah(baked stuffed), Black Angus Prime Rib, Vegetable Pasta Primavera, Chicken Caesar Salad and dessert.
We couldn’t have put on such a successful and fun event without the generosity and professionalism of the crew of the S.S. Lobster Roll, especially Dan Schadt and JC Cuchetti. Lobster Roll Cruises are out of Sesuit Harbor in East Dennis.
Proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit patient programs/services and cutting edge research. Our Foundation owes a dept of gratitude to the MacLeod Family for their unwavering support and loyal dedication to our cause. SPECIAL THANKS TO LOBSTER ROLL CRUISES AND OUR GENEROUS SPONSORS
