Driver In Sandwich Road Crash Now Faces Two Counts Of Vehicular Homicide

The second occupant of the car involved in the February 15 head-on car crash on Sandwich Road has died.

The driver of the car that collided with an oncoming pickup has succumbed to her injuries, Bourne police said.

Bourne Police Lieutenant Richard J. Silvestro said that on Tuesday, Bourne police received an e-mail from Brigham and Women’s Hospital saying that 82-year-old Barbara A. Nix of Middleborough died Monday night. He said that the department also received a phone call from the medical examiner’s office in Boston confirming her death.

On Friday, February 15, just before 6 PM, Ms. Nix was at the wheel of a 2006 Toyota Corolla with 81-year-old Dr. Hope W. Brooks of Forestdale in the passenger seat. Ms. Nix’s car was hit head-on by a 2007 Toyota Tacoma pickup being driven by 20-year-old Zachary Jamous of Harwich. Bourne police said that Mr. Jamous admitted to falling asleep at the wheel and crossing the center line.

Firefighters had to extricate both Dr. Brooks and Ms. Nix from the car with hydraulic equipment. Ms. Nix was taken to the landing zone at the state police barracks near the Bourne Bridge rotary, and flown by helicopter to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

Rescue crews took Dr. Brooks by ambulance to Tobey Hospital, where she later died from the injuries she sustained in the crash. Dr. Brooks was a well-known pediatrician in Sandwich, whose family owned Camp Good News.

Mr. Jamous was first taken to Tobey Hospital, but then also transported to a Boston hospital for treatment.

Police said that Mr. Jamous now faces two counts of motor vehicle homicide, along with negligent operation of a motor vehicle and marked lanes violation.

He has not been arraigned yet, and an arraignment date has not yet been scheduled, police said.
