GENE M. MARCHAND/ENTERPRISE - The Barnstable County Fair begins Monday at 4 PM at the Cape Cod Fairgrounds on Route 151 in East Falmouth and runs through July 27. At last year’s fair, Crystal Reed, 7, Gabriela Juliani, 7, and Tyler Reed, 9, all of Harwich, enjoyed the ride down the first drop of the roller coaster.

The Barnstable County Fair opens its gates for its 170th time on Monday, July 21.

The fair takes place at Cape Cod Fairgrounds, 1220 Nathan Ellis Highway (Route 151), in East Falmouth.

There are a few changes to the schedule this year, including opening on Monday, July 21, and running seven days versus the normal eight-day stretch. The fair ends Sunday, July 27. Hours have been truncated as well, with a 4 PM opening Monday through Thursday. Gates open at noon Friday through Sunday. The fair closes each night at 10 PM.

Wendy Brown, general manager of the Barnstable County Agricultural Society, said it is easier to control expenses with a seven-day event.

“Expenses go up each year and it came down to economics. By shortening the fair by one day, we are able to offer great mainstage shows each night,” she said.

This year’s fair has a distinctly country feel, with county music newcomers Dustin Lynch and Josh Thompson headlining. Between the two of them, they have nine Billboard US Country Top 40 singles.

Dustin Lynch’s single “Cowboys & Angels” peaked at #2 on the country charts in 2013 and his latest single “Where It’s At (Yep, Yep)” is currently #19 on the country charts. Josh Thompson’s “Beer on the Table” is a summer anthem for many on Cape Cod. Josh Thompson plays Tuesday, July 22, at 7:30 PM, and Dustin Lynch plays Saturday, July 26, at 7:30 PM.

Two other musical acts will take the stage during the fair: Vertical Horizon, known for its hit “Everything You Want,” and a Beatles tribute band—1964-The Tribute. Rolling Stone magazine called the latter “the best Beatles tribute band in the world.”

The Barnstable County Agricultural Society will present $30,000 in scholarships to Cape Cod high school students on Tuesday evening.
