(Update 11:02am May 5) Update: Police identified the victim of the crash as Samuel M. Shapiro, 22, of East Falmouth. His condition is still unknown. Fire and Rescue officials said that the car went over a guard rail before it struck the tree. Extrication took over an hour and firefighters used cutting tools from two engines. Police continue to investigate the cause of the accident.
On Thursday, May 1, at approximately 2:25 PM the Falmouth Police Department received numerous calls about a serious one-car motor vehicle crash in the area of 981 Sandwich Road.
Falmouth police officers and members of the Falmouth Fire Rescue Department found the vehicle on an embankment and pinned against a large tree. Fire and Rescue personnel used the Jaws of Life to extricate the sole occupant, a 22-year-old man. He was transported to Falmouth Hospital with serious injuries. From there, he was transported by ambulance to a Boston-area hospital.
Police did not identify the victim.
The initial investigation reveals that the vehicle, a 2011 Chevy Cruze, was traveling south on Sandwich Road. As the vehicle came around a bend to the right, it crossed the center line, crossed the southbound lane and left the roadway. The vehicle struck a guardrail before coming to rest against a tree.
The crash remains under investigation by the Falmouth Police Department.
