Mashpee Man Who Dragged Dog Behind Car Sentenced to 2 1/2 Years in Prison

A Mashpee man who witnesses said intentionally dragged a 15-month-old pit bull behind his vehicle with a leash has been sentenced to 2 1/2 years in  the Barnstable County Correctional Facility.

Darius L. Coombs, 27, was found guilty of cruelty to an animal today following a jury trial at Falmouth District Court.  The incident occurred on April 9, 2013, in the New Seabury section of town, during a domestic dispute during which Mr. Coombs also assaulted a female victim, the owner of the dog.

The dog, which fled the scene by the time emergency responders arrived, was found alive nine days later in Mashpee.  A veterinarian who examined the dog reported that he had severe road rash burns on  all four pads on his paws, right front leg, inside his right rear leg, right eye, jaw, and abdomen area.  The veterinarian confirmed that the wounds were consistent with being dragged or pulled on pavement for
a considerable distance.
