The Quashnet School in Mashpee was burglarized late Saturday afternoon, and a 14-year-old was detained in connection with the crime, reports Mashpee Police Captain Scott W. Carline.
The Mashpee Police Department was alerted to a burglary alarm, affecting multiple zones within the school, shortly before 6 PM on Friday. Upon arrival, responding officers witnessed a juvenile fleeing into the woods near the school. A K9 unit from the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office was requested to search for the suspect, who was not found.
Police did, however, apprehend a second suspect, a 14-year-old male, at the scene. He was detained, and later released into the custody of his parents.
A window at the front of the school was smashed to gain entry.
Captain Carline confirmed that stolen items from the school were recovered outside of the building, but he declined to identify the items in order to preserve the integrity of the investigation.
“The investigation is active and ongoing and we expect more charges to be filed in juvenile court later this week,” he said.
The Quashnet School is located on Old Barnstable Road, and houses grades 3 through 6. School opened without delay this morning.
Correction 2/24/14 11:33 AM - Corrected the day of the incident from Friday to Saturday.
