A rare fisher was found dead in Mashpee on Wednesday.

Commonly referred to as a “fisher cat,” the animal is known for its sharp fang-like teeth, unsheathed claws, and vicious demeanor.

Mashpee Police Lieutenant John Santangelo said that he has never seen a fisher—dead or alive—in Mashpee during his 25 years on the force.

The animal was found on Palmer Road, not far from the Quashnet and Kenneth C. Coombs schools.

Deborah R. Millman, director of the Cape Wildlife Center in Barnstable, said that fishers have established a population on the Cape, but there are not many here. She advises residents to keep small animals and cats indoors.

The Fisher cats love to eat squirrels. You know you have them in your neighborhood because they make a sound like a baby crying. They generally only go after things smaller than them like a squirrel. They can jump up to ten feet off the ground and are are three or more times faster than a squirrel

I watched a fisher climb vertically up my neighbors house and went into the attic through their gable vent which had been chewed open by squirrels . He went in and slaughtered the squirrels and it sounded like a massacre. I called animal control they never came . I'm in Sandwich. He went straight up the cedar shingles. I've heard the horrible yell they make at night across the street from me at night. It sounds like an animal being killed. The one I saw was the size of a medium to small dog. You don't want to meet one in your backyard trust me ! By the way the neighbors were not home when this happened!
