Donald Everett Sample, a longtime Falmouth resident and member of the Falmouth Football Hall of Fame, died June 30 at Bourne Manor after a period of declining health. He was 93.
Mr. Sample was born in Bridgewater, the son of Alice and Everett Sample, and spent most of his life in Falmouth. In 1938, he graduated from Lawrence High School, where he played football.
He served in the US Navy in World War II. After finishing his service, he joined the New England Telephone Company.
He married Barbara Hauston in November 1946. She died in 1986.
Upon retirement, Mr. Sample and his wife spent several years in Holiday, Florida, moving there in 1975. He was an avid golfer.
He leaves two children, Dana Dufur of Hyannis and Barbara Dufur Poole of Falmouth; his sister, Betty Miskell of Falmouth; and his brother, Herbert Sample of Falmouth. He also leaves 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Sample was predeceased by one daughter, Joan Dufur Taylor; one son, Richard Dufur; four siblings, Phyllis Boland, Barbara McVeigh, Richard Sample, and Charles Sample; and a stepbrother, Ralph Sample.
Memorial services will be private.
