Gilbert E. Way of Sandwich died on August 3, one day shy of his 98th birthday.
Mr. Way was a graduate of North Central College in Illinois. At the time of his death, he was the school’s oldest living alumnus.
While serving as a lieutenant in the US Navy in the Pacific Theater in 1941, he married Evelyn Danuser. They were married for 73 years.
After his service, Mr. Way worked for Abbott Laboratories. In 1954, he was promoted to plant manager of the company’s Needham branch. With the promotion, Mr. Way moved with his family to Westwood, where they lived for many years.
Later, Mr. Way moved to the Cape. There he owned and operated Way's Center News in Hyannis alongside his son Timothy for many years.
In his younger days, Mr. Way was an athlete, referee, and coach. In addition to being an ardent fan of the Celtics, Patriots, and Red Sox, he also enjoyed watching his grandchildren compete in cross-country, basketball, gymnastics, and track at Barnstable High School.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Way leaves his sons, Michael Way and his wife, LianWay, of Sandwich, and Timothy Way and his wife, Robin Way, of Marstons Mills; and his grandchildren, Michelle Way of Nevada, Marcy Way of Sandwich, Heather Lemming of Nevada, Jonathan Way of Osterville, Nicole Toye of Durham, New Hampshire, and Jeffrey Way of Dover, New Hampshire. He also leaves six great-grandchildren, Addison, Delaney, and Grady Toye, Sean and Ian Lemming, and Nathan Way.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday, August 8, from 11 AM to 12:30 PM at the John-Lawrence Funeral Home, 3778 Falmouth Road, Marstons Mills.
A graveside service will follow at 1:15 PM at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
