Gloria Selander, 88, of Mashpee died at the King’s Street Nursing Home in Rye Brook, New York, on April 10.
She was the widow of Herbert H. Selander.
The daughter of Irene and Cortland Strang, she attended Ursuline Academy in New Rochelle, New York, and graduated from the Medill School at Northwestern University in 1948 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. She received her master’s in education at Framingham State College in 1965.
She worked as a teacher in Hopkinton and Lake County, Illinois, for many years.
On Cape Cod, she became the Mashpee town librarian and was a former chairwoman of the Mashpee library board of trustees and a member of the Mashpee Historic Commission.
Ms. Selander was active in the New Seabury Women’s Club, at one time serving as its president, and was an honorary member of the Garden Club of Hyannis.
In addition to tending her orchids, she enjoyed reading, painting, solving crossword puzzles and bridge.
She authored the novelette, “Four Out of Focus,” with three of her Northwestern classmates in 1949.
Ms. Selander leaves her son, Robert Selander and his wife, Nancy Selander of Greenwich, Connecticut; and four grandchildren, Crosby and Russell Selander, and Jessica and Tracey Lundgren.
Visitation is at the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home 74 Algonquin Ave. (Route 151), Mashpee, on Monday, April 14, from 4 to 7 PM.
A family-only committal service will be held at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne on Tuesday, April 15, at 11:15 AM.
