Peter A. Nielsen, 78, of St. Petersburg, Florida, and a longtime resident of Falmouth, died August 13 after a lengthy battle with cancer.
The son of Anni and Willy Nielsen, Mr. Nielsen graduated from Lawrence High School in 1954. Upon graduation he enlisted in the US Coast Guard.
After leaving the Coast Guard in 1958, he worked as a civilian electronics mechanic at the Coast Guard station in Woods Hole.
He lived most of his life in Falmouth, and continued to live in town as a summer resident after moving full time to St. Petersburg.
Mr. Neilsen enjoyed vacationing in Maine and Canada. He also took rescue dogs into his home, and was especially devoted to Newfoundlands.
He leaves his first wife, Virginia E. (Wright) Nielsen of North Falmouth; his four children, Susan Fallavollita and her husband, Paul Fallavollita, of Medway, Peter Neilsen Jr. and his wife, Mary Nielsen, of North Falmouth, Virginia Baffoni and her husband, James Baffoni, of North Scituate, Rhode Island, and Bill Nielsen of St. Petersburg, Florida; and his five grandchildren, Dana, James, and Vincente Baffoni, and Domenic and Maria Fallavollita.
Mr. Neilsen was the brother of the late Shirley Howell and Phyllis McCorrison, and husband of the late Barbara (Harvey) Nielsen, who died in 2012.
Services will be private.
