Violet Slate of Mashpee died on May 2 in Mashpee. She was 89.
She was the wife of Herbert B. Slate, who died in 1998.
Born in Brooklyn, she was the daughter of immigrants from Carrara, Italy.
Ms. Slate graduated from St. John’s University in 1945.
She worked for General Electric in Schenectady, New York, from 1945 to 1951. She also worked as a substitute teacher in Schenectady.
Ms. Slate, known to friends and family as Perry, was an accomplished seamstress and gardener, an avid reader, an outstanding cook and a dog lover.
A former resident of East Dennis, she leaves three children, Nancy Krug and her husband, John Krug, of Mashpee, John Slate and his wife, Cathy Slate, of Encinitas, California, and Edwin Slate and his wife, Wendy Slate, of Falmouth; three grandchildren, Lauren Krug of Boston, Daniel Slate of Palo Alto, California, and Charlotte Slate of Falmouth; three nieces, Pamela Marraccini of Charlottesville, Virginia, Deborah Perugi-Saltus of Framingham and Janet Blade of Ford, Washington; and one nephew, James Breakey of Spokane, Washington.
Calling hours will be on Friday, May 9, from 4 to 7 PM at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 74 Algonquin Avenue, Mashpee.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 AM on Saturday, May 10, at Parish of Christ the King, 3 Job’s Fishing Road, Mashpee. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Route 134, South Dennis.
