The Sandwich Finance Committee gears up for a new budget season Tuesday night in the wake of the departure of its chairman.
Ellen R. Yaffe, who had served on the committee since June 2008, notified town moderator Garry N. Blank on June 27 that she could not accept another three-year appointment to the committee.
Ms. Yaffe, who was elected vice chairman by the committee in June 2013, was elected to head the committee this past April following the resignation of then-chairman Paul D. Sylvia.
Vice chairman Thomas R. Hickey will be acting chairman when the finance committee opens its meeting at 7 PM Tuesday, July 22, at town hall.
The board already is scheduled at the meeting to reorganize for the fiscal year that has just begun.
In other scheduled action at Tuesday’s meeting, the committee is slated to hear the latest report from the town manager and financial director.
A slew of financial management experience walks out the door with the departure of Ms. Yaffe.
Before retiring and moving to Sandwich in 2004, she was the chief financial officer for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), which was based in New York City. She also worked for the federal government as chief financial officer of the Peace Corps and as director of finance and administration for several agencies in the city of Boston.
“I did not take up the renewal of my appointment on the Sandwich Finance Committee because of plans to ‘downsize’ to a home in another community,” Ms. Yaffe said Tuesday.
“I regret having to leave as I found the work on the FinCom to be very rewarding,” she said.
