A tough stand in the bottom of the seventh Monday, May 19, by Erica Fleming gave the Lady Canalmen (6-13) an 8-7 victory over Old Rochester. The Bulldogs scored once in the frame on a home run by Kaleigh Goulart, and threatened to tie the game, but Fleming slammed the door in a complete game win. Fleming allowed seven hits and struck out two. Only four of the ORR runs were earned. She retired the side in order in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
Old Rochester took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but Bourne came back to tie the game in the second on a Renee Moore home run. Two runs for the Bulldogs in the bottom of the second gave ORR a two-run lead. They increased their lead to 6-1 in the third.
Moore led off the top of the fourth with a base hit, followed by a base hit by Fleming. Emily Gregoire drove in Moore to cut the Bulldog lead to 6-2. Bourne got right back to work in the next inning. Brittany Roderiquez walked and
Michelle Fleming moved her to second. Molly Neil then tripled, scoring both BHS base runners. Moore reached on an error and stole second, putting two runners in scoring position for the Lady Canalmen and Erica Fleming, who hit a sacrifice fly into center field scoring Neil. Gregoire then grounded out scoring Moore to tie the game at 6-6.
Bourne took the lead in the top of the sixth when Shannon Elliott walked and Roderiquez doubled to put runners at second and third. Michelle Fleming bunted to load the bases for Neil, whose base hit scored Elliott with the go ahead run. Moore then singled to score Roderiquez.
Moore had a home run, knocked in two runs and scored three times, while Neil went two for four driving in three.
A 10-3 victory on Saturday, May 17, against Upper Cape Tech guaranteed the Lady Canalmen a spot in the postseason. Fleming got the start for Bourne and went the distance in picking up the win.
Bourne jumped out to a 7-1 lead by the top of the second, but the Rams scored a second run in the bottom of the frame to make the score 7-2. UCT pushed their third run across in the fourth, but Fleming struck out five in the final three frames to secure the win. BHS scored twice in the sixth and once in the final inning.
Fleming finished the afternoon at the plate going three for five. Jenna Sundquist went three for four, with a run scored. Moore was two for four, with a double and a triple and two runs scored. Neil was two for three with two runs scored.
The MIAA will announce the pairings for the state tournament on Tuesday, May 27.
