When East Falmouth’s Ray Botelho won the Falmouth Sprint Triathlon two weeks ago, he said he was just warming up for bigger and better things.
He wasn’t kidding.
On the weekend of July 25 to 27 the 41-year-old had his best-ever finish in a major ironman race, finishing seventh overall at the annual Lake Placid Ironman competition in Upstate New York.
Botelho finished the event with a time of 9 hours, 23 minutes, 21 seconds. He finished the 2.4-mile swim portion of the race with a time of 55 minutes, 7 seconds. The next portion of the race was a 112-mile bicylce race, which he completed in 5 hours, 49 seconds. The marathon was the final portion of the event, which Botelho ran in 3:19:32.
The top finisher in the event was South African Kyle Buckingham with a time of 8:38:43.
