It was a good old-fashioned thrashing Tuesday night at Bourne High School as the Lady Canalmen hosted cross-canal rival Wareham and put on a clinic, as they ran away with a 60-39 victory.
“Obviously they played very well,” BHS coach Mike Tierney said of his team. “It’s only our fourth game and we really haven’t hit our rhythm yet. We’re still getting started.”
Brie Girouard and Amanda Pomeroy had the Vikings pinned to the mat in the opening minutes of the first quarter as they worked their way to the hoop. Girouard blocked a shot and fired the ball up the court to Shelby Corsano, who knew just what to do as she walked in for the wide open lay-up. A blocked shot by Stacy Tonello, a steal and a block by Chelsea Doucette and a blocked shot by Pomeroy, topped off by a 3-pointer from Corsano had the Vikings calling for a timeout.
Wareham fought back to cut the Bourne lead to three points in the second quarter. Doucette then grabbed a rebound and put it back up for two-points, followed by a steal by Corsano that she took to the hoop. Girouard had back-to-back baskets, Pomeroy blocked another shot and Corsano drained another 3-pointer for a 23-11 lead.
The Lady Canalmen outscored the Vikings in the last six minutes of the second quarter by an 11-1 margin to take a 25-12 lead at the break.
The third quarter belonged to Doucette, who had 13 points as Bourne went on a 22-11 scoring spree. Pomeroy opened the third quarter scoring off a dish from Girouard and then Doucette kicked it in, scoring the next six Bourne points. Doucette then set up Corsano on a fast break and got the ball inside to Girouard for a couple more, before opened another six-point run. She also hauled in three of her nine rebounds for the night.
Bourne took a 24-point lead into the final quarter, which Pomeroy opened with a deep jumper. Tonello buried a 3-pointer and then for the final six minutes Bourne had the Vikings twisting and spinning as they zipped passes back, forth and across, with the usual result being Pomeroy all alone under the basket with the ball. After that happened three times, Wareham took another timeout.
“They just have so much history together,” Tierney said of his five starters. “When they are in sync, they are very hard to play against.”
Corsano and Doucette each finished the night with 15 points. Girouard had 12 and Pomeroy had 11 points and five assists. Girouard had eight rebounds and eight assists to go along with three steals. Doucette had four steals, Tonello and Corsano each had three takeaways.
Greater New Bedford Voc Tech just ran out of answers Saturday night as they fought and clawed the best they knew how, but could not stop Bourne, as the Lady Canalmen claimed a hard-fought 55-49 victory.
Doucette led the way for BHS with a game high 21 points, followed by Corsano, who had 17. Included in Corsano’s point total were three 3-pointers.
