The three Bourne singles players cruised to victory and the two doubles teams wrapped things up in a 5-0 victory for the Lady Canalmen (9-9) over Seekonk on Monday, May 19, to end the regular season and earn BHS a spot in the state tournament.
Bri Girouard was a 6-1, 6-2 winner at first singles, while Sarah Buck (6-0, 6-0) and Abby Pomeroy (6-0, 6-0) swept their opponents at second and third singles. Gabby Siroonian and Molina Oung won at first doubles 6-4, 6-2 and Allene Gallerani and Nora Center went three sets in winning 6-3, 5-7, 7-5.
“I am extremely proud of the girls’ varsity tennis team for qualifying for the state tourney for the first time in seven years,” coach Andrew Arki said. “They played hard all season and it came down to the last regular season match to get into the tourney. The win Monday was particularly sweet because it was the first time all season that we swept our opponent by a score of 5-0. Our team definitely improved all season, and upon reflection the most important match that helped us qualify was our 3-2 win over Dighton-Rehoboth on the road, a team that is always tough to beat. In addition, we lost 3-2 twice this year to Old Rochester, a much improved performance to the 5-0 losses we suffered to them last season. I look forward to training hard this week and putting in a solid performance in the tourney.”
The MIAA will announce the Division 3 state tournament pairings in girls’ tennis on Tuesday, May 27.
