The Bourne 15-year-old all-star baseball team won last weekend’s Gateway tournament in Barnstable, with impressive wins against D-Y, Sandwich, and the Gateway All-Stars. Saturday’s matchup with the high powered D-Y squad was won by superior pitching from starter Jared Joy and reliever Mark Lima. Bourne took game one with a score of 12-9.
Sandwich was the next opponent on Sunday morning. Dylan Halverson pitched all seven innings holding off another great team. Timely hitting by Patrick Estano and good defensive plays by Joey Rogers, Mark Lima and Jack Lacasse helped Bourne’s cause. Bourne won game two, 4-3.
By winning the first two games, Bourne earned a spot in the double elimination championship game against Gateway. A win would make them champions, a loss would force another game. Mark Lima was the starting pitcher for Bourne and allowed only two runs in five innings in another stellar performance. With the score tied in the sixth inning, Bourne surrendered one run to fall behind 3-2. Ben Hall tripled on a bomb to right center field with two men on in the bottom half of the inning and later scored on a passed ball.
Bourne took the lead 5-3 entering into the last inning. Relief pitcher Jonas Lukowiz shut down Gateway to preserve the victory. Solid defensive plays by David Coakley, Andrew Gates, and Joey Rogers assisted in the win.
