Sandwich Swimmers Win 4th Annual Cape Cod Classic

The Sandwich Blue Knights swimming and diving team turned a balanced scoring attack into their third straight Cape Cod Classic victory Sunday. The Knights won the boys’ team competition with 164 points. Nauset (70) swam second, with Nantucket (65) third and Barnstable (31) fourth. The Barnstable Red Raiders won the girls’ competition for the fourth season in a row with 167 points. Nantucket (79) was second, and Nauset (60) was third. The Sandwich girls swim during the fall season.

Sandwich won the diving competition on Friday, taking the top three spots. Nauset and Barnstable do not have diving and Nantucket took second place.

Grady Bergin (173.85) won the event for the Knights, with Sam Scott (171.85) taking second. Chris Steele rounded out the top three with 125.45 points for third place.

Sunday, the Blue Knights hit the water hard taking first and third in the medley relay. Trey Kamb, Tom Cundiff, Alex Dropo, and Jack Stanton swam to a first-place finish in a state-qualifying time of 1:52.06, their fastest of the season. The team of Mike Grundman, Beau Stanton, Andrew Wilson, and Derrik Nurse finished third at 2:02.33.

Alex Simpson (1:59.76) won the 200 freestyle, Nick Crossman (2:00.87) was second, and Kellen Comer (2:14.41) swam fourth as the Knights poured it on.

“We had the diving in hand and with the first- and third-place finish in the medley relay, it was a nice way to start,” Coach Tony Compton said. “Our scoring was balanced throughout the meet, with almost all our swimmers finishing in the money.”

Sandwich won nine of the 12 events in the boys’ competition led by Dropo, who won two individual events and was part of two winning relays. Simpson and Cundiff won two individual events, with Cundiff also part of two winning relays.

Dropo (2:11.37) won the individual medley with his fastest time of the year and qualifying for the state meet. Jack Stanton (2:20.54) took fourth with his fastest time of the year and Brian Hann (2:32.58) swam sixth.

The top six places are counted in the scoring.

Cundiff (24.31) won the 50 freestyle with his fastest time of the season. Nurse set a season-best mark of 26.20 to take fourth.

Cundiff won the butterfly in a personal best time of 1:00.83. Jack Stanton (1:01.55) set a personal best, finishing second. Beau Stanton (1:08.18) swam fifth.

Kamb (56.90) led the Knights in the 100 freestyle taking third place. Zach Scott (59.76) finished fourth as both Sandwich swimmers recorded personal best times. Simpson (5:28.38) was first in the 500 freestyle, followed by Crossman (5:41.43) in second. Comer (6:01.29) finished fifth.

The Knights took first in the 200 freestyle relay with the team of Dropo, Jack Stanton, Cundiff, and Crossman posting a team-best, state-qualifying time of 1:39.60. Hann, Simpson, Nurse, and Comer (1:49.03) swam fourth.

Dropo won the backstroke in a state-qualifying time of 58.26. Kamb (1:03.82) set a personal best, finishing third, with Grundman (1:09.57) swimming fifth. Nurse (1:17.25) was third in the breaststroke, with Christian Hassler (1:18.75) taking fifth.

The Knights finished second in the final event of the afternoon with Kamb, Hann, Simpson, and Crossman posting a time of 3:50.02 in the 400 freestyle relay. Mo Sykes, Wilson, Zach Scott, and Comer (4:06.11) swam fourth.
