Jason Hendy pitched a three hitter and Mike Pratt scored three runs as Sandwich American Legion Post 188 eliminated Hingham Post 120 from the Zone 10 playoffs with a 3-0 victory. Post 188 swept the three-game series, two games to none, and advances to the South Sectional round.
Hendy threw an economical 78 pitches in dispatching Hingham. He faced just three batters in the first, fourth, fifth and sixth innings and was helped by some solid defense from Spencer Perlmuter behind the plate, Pratt in center field and Bobby Bray at first base.
With one out in the bottom of the first, Pratt launched a rocket down the right-field line for a double and when the Hingham right fielder booted the ball, Pratt kept running, stopping at third. He later scored on a wild pitch to give Sandwich a quick 1-0 lead.
Hendy had a runner reach base on an error in the top of the second but got the next two on a fly to Kyle Kaspryzk in left field and a comebacker that he tossed over to Bray at first base for the final out of the inning. In the top of the third, Hingham loaded the bases with no outs on a base hit, a walk and a Post 188 error. Hendy then started a double play, scooping a soft, ground ball back to the mound and going home to Perlmuter who gunned the ball down to Bray at first for the quick twin killing. The next Hingham batter grounded out to Jimmy Commesso at second base.
In the top of the fourth, Pratt led off with a double into center field and moved over to third on a passed ball. Wyatt Hamilton then brought him home with a sacrifice fly into center field.
Hendy gave up his second hit of the afternoon in the top of the fifth on a single into right field. He got the next batter to fly out to Pratt in center field and the next on a fielder’s choice from Kyle Garvey at shortstop to Commesso at second. When the runner on first attempted to steal, Perlmuter gunned him down to end the inning.
Bray made a pretty backhanded play at first base, going to his right on a hard shot ticketed for right field and got the ball to Hendy, covering, to end the Hingham sixth.
In the bottom of the sixth, Pratt hit a one-out single into right field, moved to second on a base hit by Bray, and came around to score the third Sandwich run on a Hamilton base hit into right.
Hendy gave up the third hit to Hingham in the top of the seventh on a single into right field with two outs. The next batter grounded out to Hamilton at third to end the game.
Pratt finished the afternoon 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Hamilton was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Mike Janerico, Bray and Kaspryzk each had singles, bringing the Post 188 hit total to eight.
Kaspryzk pitched a complete game for sixth-seeded Sandwich Monday afternoon in Hingham to open the first round of the Zone 10 playoffs with a 4-3 Sandwich win. Kaspryzk allowed just two hits, while striking out four and walking five.
Mike Pratt took the first pitch he saw in the top of the first and drove it well over the 320-foot right field fence for an early Post 188 lead. Kaspryzk held third-seeded Hingham Post 120 hitless through four innings before surrendering a single to lead off the bottom of the fifth.
