The Lady Knights (10-2-1) and Barnstable battled for two scoreless periods Wednesday night before Sandwich hit twice late in the third to claim the win by a score of 2-0.
“We qualified for the state tournament tonight,” Coach Steve Noll said. “Kells Casey did an outstanding job in goal for us. She made four outstanding saves midway through the third period without her stick.”
The two teams tied 3-3 the last time they faced one another.
Michaela Igo, with an assist from Katherine O’Brien, put Sandwich on the scoreboard with 2:31 to play. Igo launched a wrist shot over the left shoulder of BHS goalie Ali Talerman from about 20 feet away. The duo of Igo and O’Brien did it again with 1:44 left on the clock as O’Brien pushed the puck forward and Igo took it between two defenders before burying it in the back for the net.
“Megan Congro played her best game of the year,” Coach Noll added. “She was absolutely tenacious on defense. Our whole defense, Annaliese Conway, Courtney Alexander, Ashley McElhinney and Paige Wilcox were outstanding. Paige did a great job at center shutting down Barnstable’s top offensive line. Katie Flynn and Kristen Levesque were standouts on both offense and defense.”
For Casey it was her first shutout in goal this season. Her 29 saves improves her goals against average to 1.61 per game.
Michaela Igo continued to pile up the goals with four more Saturday in a 6-0 Sandwich victory over visiting Martha’s Vineyard. Igo scored 9:29 into the opening period assisted by Courtney Alexander and followed that up three minutes later with her second with Katherine O’Brien on the helper.
In the second stanza Igo registered her hat trick with a goal coming 9:23 into the period.
O’Brien made it 4-0 just 1:50 into the third period. Igo then picked up her fourth of the evening 30 seconds later and Dana Layo topped off the scoring with her first varsity goal coming with 1:56 to play.
Meg O’Connell was between the pipes picking up the shutout win with 24 saves.
