Charging in from the left side, Emma Reed fired a shot that flew to the right of the Old Rochester keeper and into the net Monday. Reed’s goal in the 38th minute of the opening half proved to be the game winner as the Lady Canalmen posted their third straight win with a 1-0 decision over the Bulldogs. For Bourne (4-4) it was their third game in a row without giving up a goal.
Brie Girouard was in net, picking up the shutout behind a solid defensive effort led by Kianna Carpenter and Caroline Kent. Girouard made a dozen stops in the winning effort.
The Lady Canalmen had some early scoring chances from Courtney Muttart and Reed, and the Bulldogs pressured the BHS net in the 25th minute off a corner shot, but both keepers kept the match scoreless until Reed struck from 18 yards out with two minutes remaining in the first half.
“It was a good team effort,” Coach Rui Correia said. “We beat Case, 1-0, then Wareham, 5-0. This is a big improvement for us over the last few games. Our work rate has picked up. Meg Ladner, Courtney Muttart and Sheehan Barton are doing a nice job in the midfield and we’re tightening things up in the back. Really, we’ve played better over the last four-game span.”
For Reed it was her third goal of the season.
“Emma plays well and doesn’t shy away from contact,” the coach said. “She didn’t play last year. She’s a nice addition to the team.”
On Friday the Lady Canalmen claimed a 5-0 victory over Wareham. Sarah Buck scored three times in the winning effort. Bourne’s other two tallies came from Reed and Shelby Fortune. Girouard split the goaltending duties with Molly Neil in the win.
