Another solid season by the Mashpee High School golf team came to a conclusion on Wednesday at the South Shore League championship meet. The Falcons finished fourth out of eight teams in the SSL as the squads squared off at Cohasset Golf Club. MHS' top three combined for a score of 257, with Mike Griffin leading the way with a solid round of 79. He was third overall in terms of the individuals at the tournament.
Monomoy won the event, firing a team score of 240. Cohasset and East Bridgewater tied for second place, each with 244.
Donnie Thompson was the second best Falcon of the day. He shot a round of 86.
Adam Bryant had an uncharacteristic off-day at the SSL Meet, as he shot a round of 92. Over the course of the season, though, Bryant has been unquestionably the top player on the team, with Head Coach Ted O'Rourke going as far as saying that Bryant had the best individual season ever during his time as the coach.
Bryant was medalist in 13 of the 20 matches that the Falcons competed in. In individual play, he posted a record of 13-2-2 with a scoring average of just 2.2 shots above par.
Earlier in the week, on Monday, the golfers participated in the MIAA Division III tournament at Dennis Highlands. Mashpee's total of 344 was seventh out of the ten teams that competed.
Bryant just missed out on advancing to the individual championship, missing the cut by one shot. He finished with a team-best 81. Seve Garris was second on the squad with an 82 and Griffin, who placed 10th at the Cape Cod Schoolboy Tournament last week, was next with a 90. Kyle Cross rounded out the scores that counted, firing a 91.
O'Rourke said that his team's season was pretty good, and that the team began to really round into shape later on in the year. "We were competitive toward the end, in the league, that was a battle," he said. "But, we made it (into the tournament)."
