The Atlantic Coast League Blue Knights sent six golfers to the Division 2 state tournament finals at the par-70 Beverly Golf & Tennis Club on Monday. After 18 holes the Knights did once again what they have done all season—they won.
Sandwich won the MIAA Division 2 state golf championship for the second time in school history, having also won it in 2005. The Knights finished second to Duxbury in 2009. When the top four scores were tallied on Monday, Sandwich had finished in a tie with Duxbury with a score of 309. The tiebreaker then becomes the scores of the fifth golfers. Jon Cassista shot an 83 while the Duxbury golfer had a round of 84, leaving Sandwich with a one-stroke victory.
Sandwich was led by Connor O’Leary who shot a one-under-par 34 on the back 9 to finish his round with a 74. Dan Cowick shot par over the front 9, coming around in 76. Tom McEntee also finished with a round below 80, coming back to the clubhouse with a 79. John Clancy rounded out the top four for the Knights with an 80. Billy Woods had a round of 87.
The addition of Cassista’s 83 to the scoring to break the tie gave Sandwich a 392 with Duxbury a swing of the club back at 393.
Masconomet Regional High School was next with a score of 311, just two shots behind the top two. Concord Carlisle (320) and Oliver Ames (321) rounded out the top five.
In addition to their ACL title, Sandwich won the MIAA Division 2 South Sectional on October 23 at the Easton Country Club, finishing with a score of 307, two strokes ahead of second-place Duxbury.
