The Lady Canalmen (2-0) got off to a slow start Tuesday night, falling behind early by a basket and then allowing Greater New Bedford Voc Tech to retake the lead at the midway point. Then, with four minutes remaining in the first quarter, Bourne opened up with the long ball as they pulled away and never looked back in a 55-49 victory.

Amanda Wright came off the bench and kick-started the offense, hitting a 3-pointer. Stacie Tonello followed 29 seconds later with another. Chelsea Doucette then put up two points from underneath. Wright stole the ball with three minutes to play and that set up Tonello for her second 3-pointer, forcing a GNBVT timeout.

After the Bears missed a couple from the free throw line, Tonello buried her third 3-pointer, this time all net from the left side. Doucette banked in another from down low, wrapping up a 16-0 scoring run for Bourne that consumed 4:17 on the clock. GNBVT’s Brittney Marshall hit a jumper with two seconds on the clock to end the first quarter with BHS holding a 21-9 lead.

The tempo slowed in the second quarter. Iris Rivera drained a 3-pointer from the left side for the Bears and Shelby Corsano answered with one from the right side for Bourne. Midway through the quarter Amanda Pomeroy hit a 3-pointer from the left side. Wright put the finishing touches on the half for the Lady Canalmen with a pull-up jumper from out front off a dish from Corsano with 14 seconds left, giving Bourne a 33-18 lead at the half.

Doucette got the third quarter underway with a lay-up off a feed from Corsano. The Bears answered and then Tonello slid one in off the glass for a 37-21 lead. Brie Girouard collected a pass from Corsano and hit a jumper with four minutes left in the third that gave the Lady Canalmen a 19-point lead.

The Bears scored the next five points but with 1:12 left, Corsano sank a 3-pointer from the right-side base line. In the final seconds Tonello stole the ball and dished it to Corsano who found Pomeroy for a lay-up and a 47-28 BHS lead at the end of the third.

The GNBVT press and 2-3 zone defense had slowed Bourne, but in the final quarter the impact was its greatest as the Bears outscored the Lady Canalmen 21-8. Bourne didn’t get their first basket of the final quarter until Girouard drove to the basket with 5:41 left to play. For the next 2:14 it was all Bears as GNBVT cut the lead to 49-40.

A lay-up by Corsano and a nice move to the hoop by Doucette added four points to the BHS tally, but in the course of six minutes the Bears had put up 15 points to just six for Bourne. Girouard hit a lay-up with 1:48 to play and that was the end of the scoring for the Lady Canalmen.

Pomeroy led Bourne off the boards with nine rebounds and two blocked shots. Girouard hauled down seven rebounds and Doucette had five. Tonello led the scoring for Bourne with 13 points, including three 3-pointers. Doucette had a dozen points and Girouard added 10. Corsano had eight points that included two 3-pointers.

Nakira Examond of GNBVT was the game high scorer with 15 points. Bourne finished 6-for-13 from the line while the Bears shot 14-for-27.

The Lady Canalmen opened the season last week with a 60-14 victory over Dennis-Yarmouth. Girouard led the charge with 15 points, and Corsano added 12.
