After a slow start in which Sandwich (5-10) never trailed by more than a basket, Joey Downes pulled up and sank a 3-pointer from the top of the key, putting the Knights on top and leading SHS to a 47-41 victory over Nauset (0-17). Downes, despite some tough Nauset defense, led all scorers with 20 points.

Aggressive offense by Sandwich forced nine turnovers in the opening quarter. Sean Reardon added three points from the free throw line and Scott Reels stole the ball at midcourt in the final seconds of the quarter, taking it in for a layup and a 13-9 SHS lead. Jake Ganley and Eric Fagerberg each had blocked shots for the Knights in the opening quarter.

Sandwich built their lead to 10 points by halftime. Ganley opened the second quarter bouncing one in off the glass off a pass from Henry O’Brien, and Downes nailed a jumpshot. Nate Johnson popped off a couple from the free throw line. Reels hit a 3-pointer from out front and hauled in a rebound in the final seconds, hitting Downes on a fastbreak for a 27-17 Blue Knight lead at the break.

Johnny Stanton found Ganley down low for another bank shot off the glass to open the third quarter. Downes setup O’Brien for a jumper and Ganley returned the favor, finding Stanton on a break for the net midway through the quarter. Nauset came back with solid play off the backboard, converting it into a six-point run to cut the lead to 33-28 after three quarters.

The Warriors tied the game early in the final quarter. Downes got the lead back from the line and Stanton added a put back as Sandwich went on a 9-0 scoring run.

The Warriors dropped in a couple of late 3-pointers, but a key rebound by Stanton slowed the Nauset offense. Downes and Stanton hit from the free throw line in the final seconds to nail down the win.

Stanton and Ganley each finished the afternoon with six points and Reels added five for the Knights. Stanton hauled down five rebounds and O’Brien collected seven. Kingsley Samuels led the scoring for Nauset with 14 points, including three from beyond the arc.
