A strong fourth quarter by the Lady Knights (6-12) led by Frani Davis landed Sandwich a victory in their final game of the season. Trailing by four points, Davis led the charge with eight points in the final six and a half minutes to help SHS to a 40-37 win over Martha’s Vineyard.
A slow start for both teams left the score knotted at 8-8 after the opening quarter. Second quarter struggles and turnovers at both ends of the court left the Vineyarders holding a 14-12 edge at halftime.
The Lady Knight defense tightened up in the second half, forcing the visitors to turn the ball over 11 times in the third quarter. Kenny Antonowicz stole the ball in the opening minute taking it to the hoop to put Sandwich on top. Martha’s Vineyard answered, but a dish from Katie Corey to Antonowicz again evened the score.
Davis came away with a steal and a basket for two points and Emily Kent had a lay-up, but at the end of the third Sandwich trailed 27-25.
The Vineyarders scored to open the final quarter, but before they could built a lead, Davis struck, scoring six points in the next two minutes. Meg Harden hit a jumper and Abby Weber took a pass from Antonowicz to the basket for two. Harden’s two free throws with 11 seconds left iced the deal for the Lady Knights.
Davis led all scorers with 14 points to which she added seven rebounds. Corey finished with seven points and Harden added another seven points and six rebounds.
Duxbury built a lead and held it for four quarters Monday night, as they dealt the Lady Knights a 54-41 defeat.
Sandwich had no answer for the Dragons’ big girl, Michaela North (16 points), who tossed in 14 points in the first half and controlled the boards in the second.
Both teams opened the game with a full court pressure defense that created more turnovers than points. Emily Kent banked one in off the glass for SHS to open the scoring and then hit twice from the line to keep the Lady Knights on top. But Duxbury came back to tie the game with 2:58 left in the opener and went on a 10-3 run led by North.
After a combined 18 first-quarter turnovers, both sides backed off on the full court press. A three-pointer by Duxbury’s Devon Tinzo and another basket by North from down low pushed the visitors up by a dozen. Katie Corey drove the lane for two points and Kenny Antonowicz hit a jumper as Sandwich gave chase. North continued to hit for the Dragons tossing up four more points in the final minute to give Duxbury a 29-15 lead at halftime.
Megan Harden hit a jumper to open the second half, and Antonowicz buried a three-pointer as Sandwich cut the lead to nine. Erin Gendreau made a nice drive to the hoop and Harden hit a three-pointer from the left side, but Duxbury continued to pound away with Maggie Norton hitting the basket twice down the stretch and North working the boards.
Gendreau dished to Frani Davis underneath for two points to open the fourth and Sidney Miller came up with a steal and fed Harden for a jumper. Another three-pointer by Harden and a three-point play by Corey topped off the Sandwich effort.
Harden led Sandwich with 12 points, Antonowicz added seven.
