With 1:16 left in the match Wednesday, Bourne’s Kyle Johnston dug the ball away from an Old Rochester player and turned it up the field to Luke Weatherby who put the match in the win column for the Canalmen with a perfect shot into the bottom right corner of the Bulldogs’ net.
The 1-0 victory was the seventh of the season for Bourne keeper Devin Delfino who made seven saves, as BHS improved to 9-2-2 overall and 9-1-1 in the South Coast Conference.
“It was a good tactical, tightly played match,” Coach Andrew Arki said. “Devin stopped a penalty kick late in the first half stretching out to his right. That gave us momentum and in the second half we poured it on. We used the entire bench; every man on the roster played his role perfectly.”
A Seekonk penalty kick in the 25th minute left Bourne trailing Tuesday afternoon until the 65th minute when Jack Canterbury lined up a pass from Jeff Small and headed it into the net for the equalizer.
“We tried to get that game winner,” Coach Arki said. “We outshot them 2 to 1. I think if we had another 10 minutes we might have scored.”
The tie assured Bourne of a spot in the state tournament.
“When we fell behind there was no panic,” Arki explained. “We’ve come from behind a couple of times this year. We just stuck to our game plan.”
The Canalmen got solid defensive play from Kyle Johnston and Zach Babcock. Devin Delfino was in goal.
“He kept us in the match,” the coach noted. “Devin made four or five big saves in the first half and he even got his fingers on that PK.”
Jeff Small drove home a ball from Jason Moriarty in the opening minutes of the match Friday, setting the stage for a 3-0 BHS victory over Fairhaven. Small scored twice with his second also in the first half, this time with Dan Moscaritolo on the helper.
Eric Smith rounded out the scoring for the Canalmen a minute into the second half, assisted by Ben Cahill. Devin Delfino earned the shutout victory in goal for BHS.
