Sandwich To Host "We Gather" Thanksgiving Day 5K

It all began during the summer of 2001 as an idea, a possible solution for generating hundreds of groceries for local food pantries. Following the events of September 11, communities everywhere were hungry for worthy causes to support simply to ease the lingering pain of what occurred on that tragic day. We Gather Together 5K Run-Walk was thus born, and its 2001 debut on Thanksgiving morning took Cape Cod by surprise, as 801 eager participants laced up their running shoes taking to th roadways of Sandwich all the while raising not hundreds, but thousands of groceries which were divided between the Sandwich Food Pantry and its sister facilities in neighboring towns on the Upper-Cape.

Next month the We Gather will make its 10th appearance in Sandwich, shine-or-rain at 8 AM on Thanksgiving Day. The event will again be staged from the Henry T. Wing School and travel a 3.1-mile course through Sandwich Village.

The We Gather Together 5K, organized by Time Out! Productions, has become a family-friendly holiday tradition. Annually since the inaugural 2001 contest the 5K has attracted well over 1,000 runners and walkers and has raised an estimated 30,000 grocery items. A record field of 1,800 flocked to the Wing School last Thanksgiving, and ‘We Gather’ Director Rich Havens senses that the 10th edition could eclipse 2,000. The 5K registration fee is $10 plus a bag containing a minimum of 10 non-opened, non-perishable packaged grocery items. There is no fee or grocery bag requirement for children under the age of 10 entering the Kidz Dash, a short quarter-mile fun run which starts from the 5K starting line at 7:45AM. The first 500 to bring the 5K entry fee and grocery bag to the Wing School registration will receive a colorful We Gather 5K tee shirt, and to the next 500, a goodie bag containing products donated by 5K sponsors. Post-5K, all will be treated to fresh-made muffins, bagels, juice, fruit and hot beverages.

Entry forms and detailed information can be accessed from the www.timeoutproductions.com website and by contacting Time Out! Productions at 508-224-3601. Those wishing to register may do so at one of two sessions inside the Multi-Purpose Hall of the Wing School on Wednesday, November 24 from 4-6 PM and on Thanksgiving morning, the 25th, from 6:30- 7:45 AM. The completed entry form and fee should not be mailed to Time Out! Productions; but instead, brought along with the grocery donation to the registration sessions.
