Sandwich’s Maggie Layo is rewriting the record book for the Lady Knights’ hockey program this winter. Layo, a senior captain, scored her 200th high school career point Saturday night in an 8-1 victory over Dennis-Yarmouth at Gallo Ice Arena. On Wednesday in a 4-2 victory at Canton, Layo scored three times and assisted on the other Lady Knight goal, raising her career total to 205 points.
Canton (2-16-1) took an early lead Wednesday night, scoring just 1:26 into the game. The Knights (12-9-1) answered three minutes later when Layo took a pass from Colleen Macdonald and tied the game.
Nicole Martin gave Sandwich a 2-1 lead midway through the second period, with a goal assisted by Layo and Katie Lowry. Martin, who moved back to help out on defense this season, returned to the blue line later in the game to help nail down the win.
In the third Layo teamed up with Lowry and Macdonald for her second goal. Canton cut the score to 3-2 with 9:59 to play, but Layo iced the win five minutes later with her third of the night, assisted by Martin and Lowry.
“Kate Towey, Colleen Macdonald and Alex Flynn were outstanding on defense for us,” coach Steve Noll said. “Mauri Currey and Anna Hurley saw some quality minutes and Allison Hir was strong as usual in net with 18 saves.
The Sandwich victory Saturday night over D-Y earned the Lady Knights a spot in the postseason state tournament. Layo, who finished the night with 201 career points, scored twice and added two assists in the SHS victory.
Layo opened the scoring 7:09 into the first period with an unassisted effort. Claire Gauthier made it a 2-0 game in favor of the Lady Knights, scoring the first of her three goals of the night, with 1:43 to play in the period. Kate Towey picked up the assist. By the end of the night Layo (54) and Gauthier (51) would have more than 100 points between them this season for Sandwich.
The Lady Knights took their 2-0 lead into the second and unloaded on the Dolphins, scoring four more times. Gauthier had two more goals, sandwiched around the lone goal of the night for D-Y, followed by goals from Layo and Towey. The final three SHS goals of the second stanza came within a minute of each other, giving the Lady Knights a 6-1 lead with a minute remaining in the period.
Annabelle White took a pass from Katie Hurley early in the third and put the Knights up 7-1. Layo polished off the Dolphins midway through the third, with Nicole Martin and Gauthier getting the assists for an 8-1 lead.
Allison Hir and Faith Lennox split time in net for the Knights.
Layo and Gauthier will join members of the Southeastern Massachusetts Girls’ Hockey League Saturday at Gallo Ice Arena for the SEMGHL All-Star Game beginning at 4 PM. The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association will also announce the pairings for the girls’ Division 2 state tournament on Saturday.
