The Lady Knights did all their damage in the first period Monday afternoon and then did everything but score again as Sandwich put on a very strong performance in defeating visiting Norwell 3-1 at Gallo Ice Arena.
Sandwich goalie Allison Hir stopped a breakaway by the Clippers in the opening period, but the Lady Knight defense then kept Norwell away from the net for most of the rest of the game as Hir played all but the final minute, turning things over to Faith Lennox to nail down the win. Hir finished the game with eight saves.
Sandwich opened the scoring 5:59 into the first period on a goal by Anna Hurley, who redirected a shot from the left side. Kate Towey and Tara McElhinney picked up the assists. Maggie Layo then gave the Lady Knights a 2-0 lead as she took a pass from Katie Lowry and raced up the slot beating the Norwell goalie Jessica Mitchell. Colleen Macdonald also assisted on the goal.
Sandwich wrapped up the first period scoring their third goal with 6:40 left to play. Nicole Martin, who recently moved to defense, remembered a thing or two about how to score a goal, as she went end-to-end skating past the Norwell defense, taking the puck right up the middle and letting loose an unassisted blast that drilled the back of the net.
The Clippers took three first period penalties. While the Lady Knights were all around the net, they just could not score. The Clippers took a penalty in the scoreless second period and once again Sandwich swarmed the Norwell net, but failed to score.
The Clippers avoided a shutout with 5:07 to play in the final period with a goal by Lilly Cleary, but never came close to picking up a second as Sandwich kept the play inside the Norwell blue line for most of the third.
The Lady Knights return to action tomorrow at the Foxboro Sports Center where they will face King Philip High School at 3:50 PM.
