By: DAN CROWLEY, June 13, 2014
After winning their season opener on Monday, June 9, over Sandwich 2, the Sandwich 1 Senior Babe Ruth team faced Barnstable on Tuesday losing a closely fought battle by a score of 5-4.
Dan Crowley got the start for Sandwich 1 and ran into trouble in the top of the first. Back-to-back singles and a two-base error gave visiting Barnstable an early two-run lead.
Crowley settled down and retired the side in order in the second and third. Sandwich tried to create some scoring chances in the second, but had two runners thrown out at second trying to steal.
Barnstable increased its lead to 4-0 in the top of the fourth, but Sandwich answered in the bottom of the frame with three runs to cut the lead to one. Christian Harold led off the fourth with a single into centerfield. Ryan McNally walked and then Pat Tierney ripped a triple into the right centerfield gap scoring both base runners. Jacob Golden then drove in Tierney with the third Sandwich run.
Barnstable pulled ahead 5-3 in the fifth with the help of a couple of Sandwich errors. In the bottom of the sixth Golden reached on an error, went to third on a base hit by Kris Carpenter and scored on a ground out by Cam Yadisernia. Sandwich threatened in the bottom of the seventh. Chris Jones led off with a base hit. Dan Thiesing moved the runner to second with a sacrifice bunt, but when the runner tried to score from second on a base hit into centerfield by Matt Dahl, he was thrown out at the plate.
Dahl and Thiesing each had two hits for Sandwich.
Crowley went three and two-thirds innings for Sandwich, allowing four runs on five hits. He struck out four and walked two. Vinny Petracca got the final out of the fourth and finished the game, surrendering one run on two hits. He struck out three, all of them in the sixth inning with the bases loaded.

Sandwich 1, the visiting team, scored in the top of the first when with two outs Harold reached on an error, took second on the throw, advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a second wild pitch. Sandwich 2 answered in the bottom of the frame when Jack Salters reached on a dropped third strike, took second on a wild pitch, went to third on a ground out by Jack DeCoste and then scored on a ground out by Curtis Bridge.
