Three Sandwich Players Help U19 Storm To Hockey Championship

Three members of the Sandwich High School Lady Knight hockey team were part of the Cape Cod Storm U19 Girls’ Team that won the Tier II Massachusetts State Championship on Sunday. Seniors Maggie Layo and Claire Gauthier and junior Nicole Martin helped the Storm to a 3-1 victory over the Charles River Blazers. Layo and Gauthier each scored in the championship game. The Storm went 6-0 throughout their Tier II tournament run, allowing just five goals. The victory was the first  for the U19 team in program history.

The team, which is based in Falmouth, advances to represent Massachusetts at the National Tournament to be held during the first week of April at Amherst, N.Y.

Gauthier and Layo are captains this winter for the Sandwich Lady Knights. Along with Martin the three were among the top scorers last season in the Southeastern Massachusetts Girls’ Hockey League.

    Way to go girls, you were great. Jane and I came down from Massena NY. to watch the Storm play, our granddaughter is on the team (Maggie Layo) and the out come couldn't have been better. Good luck to the Storm in Amherst, NY in April.
